People always say black people can't swim or we don't go to the beach. Don't get me wrong their are a lot of black folks who can't swim and do not enjoy the beach. And I blame it on their parents. I'm from the inner city and I wasn't taught how to swim although my Pops is like a fish in the water. I remember my moms saying, "Don't get in that water something might bite'cha your ass and you ain't going to be able to bite it back" Sometimes your parents have there on inner fears, but parents must know that black kids or any kid who doesn't know how to swim is missing out on the beauty of nature. I had to learn how to swim on my own and I later took lessons. So, for my young kids out there make sure you are pushing your parents to teach you all the little things in life, and for my inner city kids who are not surrounded by large bodies of water and do not have parents at home to teach them. Make sure you stay on your Rec. center counselors to schedule field trips to the beach or a swimming pool.
